Deadly disease won't stop wedding bells for Temple City man

TEMPLE CITY - Manny Sosa won't let a deadly disease stop him from marrying the woman he loves.

Sosa, 44, is battling end-stage liver disease related to Hepatitis C and is now on a list to receive a liver transplant. He and his fiance, Adriana Tafoya, 32, hope the ravaging disease will spare him until then.

"There are things that I haven't yet learned that I need to," Sosa, a tall man with striking features, said recently from the couple's Temple City home. "I think there are things I can offer people, love and advice, from the things I've experienced in my life."

On Monday, the couple will exchange vows at an intimate ceremony at the Maxwell House in Pasadena. The whole event - from the couple's attire, to the

catering and venue - is being donated by area vendors through Wish Upon a Wedding, a nonprofit that grants weddings for those facing life-threatening illnesses and other serious circumstances.

Sosa, who has five children but never married, said he is "in shock" by everyone's generosity.

"I told them, `why would you guys help us?"' said Sosa, who owned a real estate investment firm before doctors ordered him to stop working years ago. "I was very touched, especially because I wouldn't be able to do it because of my sickness and my finances."

Sosa and Tafoya's wedding will be the third for the Southern California Chapter of Wish Upon a Wedding, one of two dozen chapters throughout the nation.

"We try to make them feel like guests at their own wedding so they don't have the stress leading up to it," said Stacey Gitten, a chapter spokeswoman. "They can just bask in the moment of their special day and get to this milestone that many feel like they will never get to."

The night Tafoya, a single mom, met Sosa through a mutual friend in 2006, she told her mother that she had met the man she was going to marry. She even found a muscular photo of him that she placed on her computer at work, even though the two were friends who spoke once every few months.

"I just let it happen," Tafoya said. "I said `I'm not going to chase after his guy because he's going to be mine someday.' I just knew it."

Nearly three years later, Sosa asked her out on a date. The two immediately became inseparable even as the illness would hit Sosa particularly hard that year, landing him frequently in the hospital for weeks at a time.

"I feel no matter what, I want to be there right next to him," Tafoya said. "I want to be there by his side. I just never want ... for him to go through it alone."

His life since he was diagnosed, he said, has been a physical and emotional roller coaster.

He was put on the transplant list once before and then taken off after Tafoya, his domestic partner, lost her job and their health insurance.

Sosa has growths in his stomach and behind his spleen, which are periodically checked by doctors for cancer. Doctors are also carefully monitoring a potentially dangerous blood clot near his liver.

At times, he has felt so much pain from his illness, which also inflames his gallbladder, that he has curled up on the bathroom floor in the fetal position.

That's when you know it's bad, Sosa said, since he has a "high tolerance" for pain.

"When I was a kid and people would do things to me, I wouldn't even cry," he said.

Sosa, a former gym rat who loved lifting weights, maintains a strict low-sodium diet to avoid uncomfortable water retention and is prohibited from rigorous exercise or heavy lifting. He takes about 10 different kinds of medicine a day.

"What's weird about this disease, I'll wake up and I'll feel good," he said. "I'll think today's going to be a good day, but you start walking around a little bit and all of a sudden - boom - you hit a brick wall, just real exhausted."

Although Sosa isn't considered sick enough yet to get bumped to the top of the transplant list, he looks forward to having a healthy liver one day and leading a new and very different life with his soon-to-be wife.

"I can't wait to feel normal," he said. "I can't wait to eat like a normal person, where people are enjoying their food."

But in the meantime, he said, he doesn't want people to see him as being sick.

"When I was first sick, I lost 40 or 50 pounds. I would hear in the next room, `Oh my God, he looks horrible," he said. "People were crying, feeling sorry for me. I didn't really want to be remembered as somebody like that. I want them to remember me as positive, as a fighter."

Climate change may have caused Mayan civilization's collapse

For unknown reasons, the ancient Mayan civilization then disintegrated more than a millennium ago. The number of people declined catastrophically to a fraction of the empire's former size, and the ruins of its great cities are now largely overgrown by jungle.

The collapse of the ancient Mayan civilization may have been linked to relatively modest dry spells, researchers now say.

The?ancient Mayan empire?once stretched across an area about the size of Texas, with cities and fields occupying what is now southern Mexico and northern Central America, including the countries of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras. The height of the Mayan empire, known as the Classic period, reached from approximately A.D. 250 to at least A.D. 900.

The ancient Maya had what was arguably the most advanced civilization in the Americas. For instance, they made dramatic breakthroughs in astronomy that helped them very accurately predict where the moon and other planets would be in the sky centuries in the future. They also left behind many books and stone inscriptions regarding the?stories of their gods?and the history of their divine kings and queens.

For unknown reasons, the ancient Mayan civilization then disintegrated more than a millennium ago. The number of people declined catastrophically to a fraction of the empire's former size, and the ruins of its great cities are now largely overgrown by jungle. [Photos: First Glimpse into a Mayan Tomb]

Scientists have long drawn connections between?the slow decline of the ancient Maya, which took about two centuries, "to climate change, and especially to drought," said researcher Mart?n Medina-Elizalde at the Yucatan Center for Scientific Research in Mexico. "No sound estimates had been made about the severity of this drought, but some have suggested extreme scenarios."

To see how much rainfall the ancient Maya saw before the demise of their civilization, the researchers combined the four most detailed records of past climate changes known regarding the civilization's collapse ? three from nearby lakes and one from a stalagmite, a mineral formation that grows upward from a cave floor. This helped develop a model of "the region's balance between evaporation and rainfall," Medina-Elizalde said.

The scientists found that rainfall in the region decreased episodically for periods as long as a decade at a time.

"Our results show rather modest rainfall reductions between times when the Classic Maya civilization flourished and its collapse between 800 to 950," said researcher Eelco Rohling, a paleoclimatologist at the University of Southampton in England. "These reductions amount to only 25 to 40 percent in annual rainfall, but they were large enough for evaporation to become dominant over rainfall, and open water availability was rapidly reduced. The data suggest that the main cause was a decrease in summer storm activity."

The timing of these dry spells might help explain why modest reductions in rainfall still may have helped cause the demise of a well-established civilization.

"Summer was the main season for cultivation and replenishment of Maya freshwater storage systems and there are no rivers in the Yucatan lowlands," Rohling said.

It appeared to Rohling that the ancient Maya had become reliant on continuous rainfall supplies, and had stretched the capacity of their farmlands to a fine limit based on normal levels of rain. "Then, even a rather subtle climatic change was enough to create serious problems," he told LiveScience. "Societal disruptions and abandonment of cities are likely consequences of?critical water shortages, especially because there seems to have been a rapid repetition of multiyear droughts."

Rohling emphasized they are not saying that climate ended the ancient Mayan civilization. "We are documenting that there was a reduction in rainfall, and that reservoirs of water were evaporating," he said. This may in turn have led to societal unrest or diseases or both, "which are more likely to explain the actual collapse of society."

The scientists noted that the droughts they saw during the demise of the ancient Mayan civilization were similar in severity to those projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the near future in the same region. [10 Surprising Results of Global Warming]

"There are differences too, but the warning is clear ? what seems like a minor reduction in water availability may lead to important, long-lasting problems," Medina-Elizalde said. "This problem is not unique to the Yucatan Peninsula, but applies to all regions in similar settings where evaporation is high. Today, we have the benefit of awareness, and we should act accordingly."

The scientists detailed their findings in the Feb. 24 issue of the journal Science.

Daily Devotional: Put to Death Therefore What is Earthly in You

February 25

?

Put to death therefore?what is earthly in you:?sexual immorality, impurity,?passion, evil desire, and covetousness,?which is idolatry.? Colossians 3:5

?

To constantly fight against sin is a big part of mortification.? We need to recognize the enemy we are dealing with and that he is to be destroyed by all means possible.? The battle is a hazardous one that deals with issues of eternity.? When a man sees his lust as a trivial thing, it is an indication that he is not mortified.? We cannot go forward unless we recognize the danger of our own hearts.? We need to be intimately acquainted with the ways, wiles, methods, advantages, and occasions in which lust has won the victory.? This is the way that men deal with their enemies.? They search out their plans, ponder their goals, and consider how and by what means they have prevailed in the past.? Then, they can be defeated.? This is a most important strategy.? If you do not utilize this great strategy, your warfare is very primitive.? We need to know how sin uses occasions, opportunities, and temptations to gain advantage.? Search its pleas, pretences, reasonings, strategies colours, and excuses.? We need to trace this serpent in all of its windings, and to recognize its most secret tricks: ?This is your usual way and course; I know what you aim at.?? Even when one thinks that a lust is dead because it is quiet, we must labour to give it new wounds and new blows every day.? The soul in this condition has the upper hand.? Sin is under the sword and is dying.? Frequent success against any lust strengthens us.? When the heart recognizes at any time sin and temptation at work, seducing and forming sinful imaginations to get you to fulfill its lusts, the heart must immediately see it for what it is, bring it to the law of God and the love of Christ, condemn it, and follow It to the uttermost.? These weapons will lead to a great degree of success.

Many young parents today are beside themselves with anxieties about their children, and, sadly, confusion too about how to nurture them. The ongoing addiction of our times to the heresy of modernity and its proud rejection and ignorance of the tested and tried wisdom of the past, inevitably leads to dysfunction in home and family life. Sadly, the older, wiser counsel of God?s Word, and especially of the book of Proverbs, is unknown or neglected. Yet Proverbs was composed specifically as a manual for home and family instruction, and to prepare us for life in the world. It is a divinely given handbook to help parents.

?

Proverbs and Ken Wingate following them shows us the way to possess the jewel of all jewels in a well-adorned life: wisdom that is rooted in the knowledge of, and reverential love for, God. Here is true wisdom that will prove to be worth its weight in gold in every age and culture. Ken Wingate now brings it into our needy culture, and I for one am grateful to him for sharing his gift as a father with other fathers and mothers, and sons and daughters too.

?

Here then is a book for parents to read on their own; for teenagers to read on their own; for parents and teenagers, who are willing to take the family challenge, to read round the table after dinner or on other occasions. It points us to Gods way. It promises us God?s grace. What could be better for us than that?

WriteAndCorrect.com ? Health Fitness

Health fitness involves exercising and working out to look and feel better. Your physical and mental well being depend on it. Exercising can reduce your chances of heart disease and diabetes. It can also reduce the effects of depression and eliminate stress. The physical and mental benefits of health fitness are well worth the efforts. They will ensure you are able to live a healthier, happier life. Do you want to just live your life or do you want to enjoy your life? The choice is yours.

Health fitness involves finding activities that are going to improve your current fitness level. Everyone?s current level of fitness is different so improving your fitness level can be walking for 10 minutes and for someone else it can be jogging an extra ? mile. The point is you have to start somewhere and you should only compare yourself to where you want your health fitness level to be in the next year. Set realistic goals that are challenging but achievable.

There are too many ways to improve your health fitness to count. You get to choose the activities that you are able to participate in that you enjoy. This is one way to motivate yourself. If you enjoy football then go play it twice a week. If you hate aerobics then don?t do it. Look for another exercise that will help your heart but that you like doing. For too long in our society exercise has been viewed as something dreadful that we avoid at all costs. If you want your health fitness goals to be possible then turn the entire situation into something positive.

Health fitness isn?t all about exercise either. How many of us take the time to meet our own needs on a regular basis? Not very many of us. Our careers and families keep us plenty busy. Take some time for yourself at least once a week for one hour. Use this time to do something for only yourself. It can be as simple as enjoying a bubble bath or reading a good book. Take up a hobby you enjoy or learn a new skill. This quality time will help you unwind and relieve stress. It is a very important part of health fitness. Our mental health can cause physical health problems for us as well as affect our diet and sleep patterns.

Eating properly also plays an important role in health fitness. You will feel sluggish and irritable if you consume large amounts of carbs, fats, and sugar. They give you a temporary boost of energy but not for long. Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables will help you maintain energy levels all day long without the fluctuation. You will also consume less calories but feel full all day long. Health fitness is a very important issue that more of us need to focus our attention on. It affects both our physical well being and our mental well being. Health fitness gives us the opportunity to be the healthiest we can. You will look and feel better than you have in a long time.

H5N1 bird flu infection may be more common, less deadly, than thought

The World Health Organization says the H5N1 bird flu kills nearly 60% of people who become infected, but a study released Thursday suggests the true fatality rate may actually be much lower.

Virologists at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City examined data on blood samples collected from more than 12,000 people in Asia, Europe and Africa and found evidence of H5N1 infection in 1% to 2% of cases. Most of those people did not become ill with the flu, according to a report in the journal Science, and none of them died.

The findings, which used data from 20 previously published studies, suggest that many more people have been infected with H5N1 flu viruses than the 586 officially confirmed by the WHO as of Wednesday; if so, the fatality rate could be lower than the 59% reported by the global health agency.

"The World Health Organization criteria that are currently being used for confirmation of H5N1 infections are good for the identification of very severe cases, but they do not pick up the cases that are mild or asymptomatic" because such patients are less likely to seek treatment in a hospital, said postdoctoral researcher Taia Wang, who led the study.

Flu experts have speculated before that the WHO's surveillance system is patchy and misses an unknown number of cases. There is no scientific consensus about what the true fatality rate is.

Gregory Hartl, a WHO spokesman in Geneva, acknowledged Thursday that the agency's criteria for confirming bird flu cases might underreport mild cases. But he said it was more likely that officials were missing cases of bird flu deaths.

In some regions of the world where people have contracted H5N1, including parts of Asia, patients are unlikely to go to a hospital "until very late, if at all," Hartl said. Anyone who died from bird flu outside of a hospital would not be included in the official tally.

Even if the fatality rate is substantially lower than 60%, bird flu still has the potential to pose a very serious danger to humans if it were to mutate in a way that allowed it to spread easily between people. So far, cases of direct human-to-human transmission have been rare.

"You could reduce the seriousness of this virus twentyfold and it would still exceed that of the 1918 Spanish flu," said Michael T. Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.

The H1N1 flu responsible for the 1918 outbreak had a fatality rate of about 2%. But it killed as many as 50 million people worldwide because it spread easily between people.

Flu researchers have been studying H5N1 to see if has the potential to become more contagious in people, and two research groups have created strains that pass easily between lab ferrets, which react to influenza much as humans do.

In December, fears of an H5N1 pandemic led a U.S. government biosecurity advisory board to seek restrictions on the publication of that research. The request angered scientists who said they needed to share their findings in order to develop vaccines and prepare for a possible pandemic.

But the biosecurity panel, of which Osterholm is a member, said the data could be dangerous if it wound up in the wrong hands.

Scientists and public health officials are still debating how to proceed. Last week, the flu researchers agreed to continue a moratorium on the research and further delay publication of their findings while the issues are sorted out.

NKorea marks late leader's birthday by backing son (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? Senior North Korean officials are pledging loyalty to new leader Kim Jong Un ahead of what would have been his late father Kim Jong Il's 70th birthday.

Kim Jong Un and thousands of military and party officials gathered Wednesday in Pyongyang. Kim Jong Il's birthday is Thursday.

The audience clapped loudly as ceremonial head of state Kim Yong Nam gave a speech praising Kim Jong Un as the unquestioned successor to Kim Jong Il.

Kim Jong Il died in December. North Korea has since held nationwide rallies and conventions to pledge allegiance to his son.

Kim Jong Un is believed to be in his late 20s. North Korea's General Staff chief Ri Yong Ho sat next to him during Wednesday's gathering.

Taliban announce death of ex-defense minister (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? The Taliban's former defense minister died in a Pakistani jail in 2010, a spokesman for the insurgent group said Monday.

Little had been heard of Obaidullah Akhund since he was arrested by Pakistani authorities in 2007.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said Monday that relatives have recently been informed that Obaidullah died of heart disease in a Karachi prison on March 5, 2010.

Obaidullah was one of the top deputies of Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar when the Islamist regime ruled Afghanistan in the 1990s. He was arrested in early 2007 in the southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta. At the time, he was the highest-ranking Taliban figure to be captured since the fall of their hardline regime in 2001.

The Taliban said they want Pakistani officials to provide details about his arrest, incarceration and death.

Obaidullah's name was among those floated earlier this year as possible representatives for potential peace talks with the insurgent group.

The Taliban are setting up an office in Qatar in the first step toward formal negotiations. The Obama administration is now considering releasing five top Taliban leaders from the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay as a starting point for talks. Republicans in Congress oppose the release of the prisoners.

In Afghanistan, meanwhile, the Afghan government is working to sign a series of strategic partnerships with the countries providing its military and financial backing as international forces draw down and try to shift to a focus more on training Afghan forces.

On Monday, President Hamid Karzai's office said the government has signed a long-term partnership with Italy for continued financial support and military training. The agreement states that Italy will continue these efforts after 2014 ? when the Afghan government is expected to take the lead in securing the country.

The statement from Karzai's office did not give any details on the rules that would govern Italian personnel in Afghanistan after 2014, or how long Italy's commitment would last.

Fighting has continued amid the talk of negotiations with the Taliban and the preparations for the handover of more security responsibility to the Afghan government.

In southern Afghanistan on Monday, a member of Britain's Royal Air Force was killed during a routine patrol in Nad Ali district of Helmand province, the British Ministry of Defense said. The death brought to at least 36 the number of international service members who have died since the beginning of the year.

Last year was the deadliest on record for civilians since the beginning of the Afghan war, with more than 3,000 killed primarily in insurgent attacks and bombings, according to a U.N. report released earlier in February. Civilians have also died in NATO operations, though in lower numbers.

Also Monday, Afghan investigators said they have confirmed that 15 civilians died in two NATO operations in Kunar and Kapisa provinces earlier this year. A NATO spokesman said the coalition regrets any civilian lives lost from the operations but that the international troops followed appropriate protocol in both instances.

In the more recent incident in Kapisa, German Brig. Gen. Carsten Jacobson, the spokesman, said it was not clear if all the deaths were caused by the NATO operation.

Schild wins, Vonn falls in WCup slalom (AP)

SOLDEU-GRANDVALIRA, Andorra ? Marlies Schild of Austria won her sixth World Cup slalom of the season on Saturday after overall leader Lindsey Vonn crashed out in the opening run on the Pyrenees course.

After finishing the first run in fifth place, Schild blazed through the 59 gates in a strong second run to clock a best time of 1 minute, 39.44 seconds, putting her one victory shy of the 34 slalom wins held by Swiss great Vreni Schneider.

Frida Hansdotter of Sweden was 0.60 seconds behind, while Kathrin Zettel of Austria was 0.86 seconds back in third.

Vonn started well but fell after taking a gate wide and slid down the center of the hill. Defending champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch also fell during her first run.

Tanja Poutiainen of Finland led after the opening run, but missed a gate with gusty wind on the Avet course.

Accessing Tech: Rural Communications

Rural BroadbandI have talked about the necessity of technologies such as broadband internet and telephone service for low-income individuals. In my initial post, I noted that there are relatively simple things communities can do to make sure that low-income populations have access to these services. This assertions was, admittedly, an urban-centric solution. Making sure that low-income residents in rural areas have telephone and internet access is an entirely different, and more difficult, matter.

The need for such solutions is rather obvious, given a few statistics. A Pew survey found that 50% of rural households had broadband internet access compared to 70% of urban households. Broadband is often more difficult to get in rural areas because the low population density and geographical issues make it less cost-effective for telecommunications companies to provide internet access to rural areas. There are also issues with telephone access in these areas. The FCC recently cited a study that finds that 80% of rural telephone companies are affected by "call completion" problems, which include calls not reaching residents and poor call quality. This can be an unacceptable hindrance when looking for a job or trying to access social services.

The Census Bureau puts the number of people below the poverty line in rural areas at 16.5% in 2010, compared to 14.9% of people in urban areas, meaning that it is essential to develop solutions to provide these areas with consistent, high-quality access to these technologies so that the poor residents in these areas can enjoy the benefits of the technologies. The FCC has taken steps to ensure that the "call completion" problems in rural areas are reduced by issuing an order that should reduce the types of practices that lead to such degradation of service. They also have an initiative to bring broadband Internet access to rural communities.

But communities should also be working towards these ends themselves. It is essential to have education programs in place so that communities can get a sense of why they should have quality telecommunications access and how they should work with providers to prove that there is a demand for consistent, high-quality access to such services. These education programs would give low-income rural communities the resources they need to fight for these essential services and help to improve the lives of many of their residents, particularly their low-income residents who rely on these technologies to stay afloat.

[This is the fourth post in an ongoing series about the intersection of poverty/homelessness and technology. The articles will be collected here.]

Repsol YPF ups Argentine shale deposit potential (AP)

SANTIAGO, Chile ? Repsol YPF on Wednesday raised the estimate for potentially recoverable oil and gas in its part of Argentina's "Vaca Muerta" (Dead Cow) basin to the equivalent of nearly 23 billion barrels, indicating a total shale deposit big enough to enable Argentina to challenge the United States in non-conventional petroleum production.

But it cautioned that exploiting the formation would need a huge expansion in Argentina's oil and gas industry, requiring thousands of wells, hundreds of drilling rigs and a national push to attract the necessary talent, equipment and investment at a time when other countries are competing to increase energy resources.

The company's shares traded on the Buenos Aires stock exchange jumped 8 percent after the announcement.

Repsol YPF SA, a majority-Spanish-owned company, issued the statement from Madrid shortly after its president, Antonio Brufau, returned from a series of closed-door meetings in Argentina with government officials who have been pressuring the company to increase exploration and development.

The pro-government newspaper Pagina12 in Buenos Aires said Repsol YPF has been paying out more in dividends than it has made in profits in Argentina, and suggested President Cristina Fernandez might consider nationalizing the company's Argentine operations so the money could instead be used to increase Argentina's energy capacity.

Juliette Kerr, a Latin America energy analyst at IHS in London, discounted the possibility of nationalization, saying Argentina can't afford a buyout. The idea was never openly endorsed by Fernandez or her Cabinet ministers.

Company spokesmen and government officials declined to comment on the talks this week.

But Wednesday's statement, made as a filing to Spain's securities regulator, provided a stark analysis of Repsol YPF's commitment to Argentina and how much would have to change for the country to realize its energy dreams.

"If exploration proves successful in the Vaca Muerta formation and immediate intensive development began in the area, in 10 years its capacity could double Argentina's existing gas and oil production. This would require a vast investing effort that would reach $25 billion per year in order to develop all the existing prospective resources," it said.

Repsol YPF said in November that it had discovered 927 million barrels of recoverable oil and natural gas in the shale deposit. But even 23 billion barrels ranks below Brazil's recent deep-sea oil discoveries, which experts estimated at up to 55 billion barrels, or the 296 billion barrels of proven crude reserves that Venezuela claims.

Argentina currently has only 80 drilling rigs and would need at least 100 more, along with upgrades in all sectors of its oil and gas industry, to capitalize on the potential of the deposit in western Neuquen province, the company said.

Repsol YPF currently is the leader in exploring in this area, having invested $300 million in exploration, mapping and initial development, but has claims on less than half of the formation, which stretches over 7.4 million acres. Many other companies would need to make substantial investments for the area to achieve its potential, it said.

So far, only a tiny fraction of the Vaca Muerta foundation has been developed, producing 700,000 barrels as of December, and the statement suggested that Brufau didn't give in to the pressure for huge new investments right away.

"The company aims to drill 20 wells in 2012, solely and jointly with several partners, to continue investigating prospective resources," it said.

The statement suggested international investors may be holding back until they have confidence that Argentina will guarantee government policies and labor unrest won't get in the way of eventual profits. Instead, Argentina has been withdrawing energy exploration subsidies, dealing with a punishing oil workers strike and making it more difficult for multinational companies to move their gains out of the country.

(This version CORRECTS second reference to 23 billion barrels as Repsol YPF's share, rather than estimate of overall deposit.)

Pentax refreshes its rugged camera lineup with the Optio WG-2 series

Pentax refreshes its rugged camera lineup with the Optio WG-2 series
Exactly twelve months after the unveiling of the Optio WG-1 family, Pentax is now introducing the successors to its colorful and ruggedized shooters. And while its macho design hasn't changed much, the newcomers usher in a host of predictable spec bumps. The new all-terrain shooters are sporting a 16-megapixel, back-illuminated CMOS sensor, 1080p (30fps) movie mode, micro-HDMI for when you feel like sharing your adventures and a 3-inch, 460,000 -dot LCD to help you frame your shots. Of course, this wouldn't fall under the rugged category if it couldn't handle anything you threw at it, which is why any WG-2 is waterproof up to 40 feet, shock-resistant and dustproof. If you're thinking about taking one of these on the trails with you, be ready to unleash around $350 for the unguided model or about $50 more for a GPS-enabled number. Neither will be available until March, so you'll have to wait a while, but in the meantime we've got the full PR below along with some press shots.

Teach for China: Bringing educational equality to rural children ...

Jarlene's classroom
China?s rural schools have a severe shortage of teachers, resulting in crowded classrooms, sometimes numbering 80 students. Many rural teachers have only completed high school themselves and native English instructors are rare. While the government has a high commitment to raising the quality of rural education, there is a staggering amount of work to do.

That?s where Teach for China (TFC) sees its value. Now in its third year, TFC is the first alternate sourcing teaching program of its kind in China and follows existing models like Teach for America. Its mission is to eliminate the educational inequality in China by enlisting college graduates from prestigious US and Chinese Universities like Harvard, Yale, Peking and Tsinghua.

TFC sends cross-cultural teams to under-resourced primary and middle schools in Yunnan and Guangdong provinces. This school year the program has over 150 teaching fellows who are working to educate students beyond their ABCs.

Breaking the cycle of complacency
High school and college are too expensive for most rural Chinese families. Many parents (who often have lower education levels) are resigned to the fact that their children will probably follow them by becoming farmers or migrant workers after completing middle school.

According to second year fellow Hao Linshuo, ?Students receive no wholehearted confidence from their influencers. Even the local teachers don?t believe the kids can really succeed.?

To combat the complacent attitude, fellows like Linshuo and Jarlene Choy, who teach at the same school in Yunnan, work to engage students, their families and teachers.

Linshuo makes home visits to two-thirds of her students and meets with students one on one.

?Talking to them individually takes a lot of time, but I feel like it is worth it,? she said. ?They rarely get special or individual attention.?

Song and dance Fugen dances at his school art festival
Linshuo said her student Fugen was one such child. Unofficially diagnosed with Asperger?s syndrome, he had almost no friends, rarely spoke and was last in the class. Fugen?s mother had given up hope but she told Linshuo her son did enjoy one thing?dancing.

?I thought it might be a connection point with him,? said Linshuo. ?I signed him up for a performance at our school art festival and practiced a dance with him.?

In front of nearly 2000 students and faculty, Fugen performed his dance and won first prize in the dancing category. He later wrote an essay about it, saying that he had never before been so confident and he felt that someone actually cared about him. His grades have since improved and he talks more both inside and outside of the classroom. He is also applying to a high school with an art focus.

Linshuo doesn?t expect to change a child?s entire life, but she says, ?I can change a short period of his life, which might bring more to his life later on.?

Creative expansion
For TFC fellows, quelling complacency means broadening students? existing educational opportunities.

?I feel like there is a lot out there that I want to expose them to so they can have bigger goals beyond just what they can see here,? said Jarlene.

In addition to following the regular curriculum, fellows plan extracurricular activities, use songs to teach and host events. They also encourage other local teachers to incorporate creative activities into their lesson plans.

The art of teaching
Jarlene, a first year fellow, admits that mastering the classroom is a challenge. In her class of 59 she says, ?A lot of kids have been passed thru but haven't mastered the foundational skills yet.? Additionally, there is no provision for children with learning disabilities and special needs.

Linshuo and Jarlene say they receive a lot of support from TFC, beginning with an intensive training the summer before classes start. Monthly professional development conferences are held every month to further educate and support fellows.

Fellows are held to a high standard and monitored to ensure they adhere to three core values: improving students? academic achievement, developing critical thinking skills and building a culture of achievement.

Local teachers also attend trainings to provide insight into the rural Chinese education system. ?We?re not only learning from them but the local education administrators are also learning from us,? said Linshuo.

Teach for China
Long-term change

Fellows hope more students can accede to higher levels of education, but realize that often results in a rural brain drain as students choose to move to cities permanently. Linshuo wants to encourage her students otherwise.

?I want to build a sense of giving back so they know they?re not just learning to get a good grade but they?re learning to be able to come back in the future and build their own communities.?

Beyond the classroom, developing dialog between local education leaders and TFC fellows is an important part of the organization?s goal to create lasting change in the education system and in the lives of rural children. And while TFC fellowships are only two years, the organization hopes to build lasting partnerships with schools.

TFC also encourages fellows to continue their development as they move into other sectors, helping them find graduate school and internship opportunities. TFC expects past fellows to continue to be lifelong advocates for educational equality in China across industries.

?Teaching as leadership is the core concept?that you?re not just training the fellows to become excellent teachers, you?re training them to become excellent leaders.? said Linshuo

From the individual child to global partnerships, TFC hopes to build a community that brings the dream of equal education closer to all Chinese children.

For more information read A 5 Minute Guide to Rural Education and watch Linshuo's video on her visit to a student's home (Chinese only).

In Minn., rightward drift challenges Romney

On the eve of the Florida GOP primary, presidential candidate Rick Santorum campaigns on Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, in Luverne, Minn. Santorum told about 300 Minnesota voters who had gathered to hear him speak that their votes weren't paid as much attention as Iowa's, but that they were "just as important." (AP Photo/Amber Hunt)

(AP) ? Minnesota once took pride in progressive reform and political consensus.

Then last summer warring leaders shut down state government during a fierce political struggle in the Capitol. Vitriol commonly erupts during otherwise routine political discussions, and people are arguing over whether to ban gay marriage.

So much for the state's modern political heritage.

Minnesota Republicans are now "among the most conservative party activists in the country," said Chuck Slocum, who led the Minnesota Republican Party in the mid-1970s.

And that could pose problems for front-runner Romney, fresh off a commanding win in Nevada and eager to extend his winning streak. Candidates considered more conservative ? former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich ? are working to impede the former Massachusetts governor's march to the nomination. For now, even the libertarian-leaning Ron Paul, long considered a gadfly, could be a player in the Minnesota caucuses.

Without recent reliable polls, gauging just where the race stands is tough.

Romney won here in 2008, and his financial edge is supplemented by a strong campaign organization. But the motivated and increasingly powerful conservative activists offer encouragement to Gingrich and Santorum, who are voicing a more strident message. A large number of these voters are expected at the caucus meetings.

"Those who attend are the hard core of the hard core of conservatives," said Ben Golnik, who managed Arizona Sen. John McCain's Minnesota campaign in 2008 and isn't backing a candidate this year. "These are truly dedicated conservatives willing to go on a weeknight in the dead of winter."

The rebellious mood in Minnesota in some ways belies the state's prosperity. The unemployment rate in January was 5.7 percent, well below the national rate of 8.3 percent. Minnesota was spared the worst of the housing foreclosure crisis, and the farm economy has been buoyed by high prices. Even the perpetually struggling Iron Range of northern Minnesota hopes to add hundreds of jobs from new mining projects.

But those positive signs haven't lightened the tone.

Conservatives continue to focus on a state government that supports some of the nation's most generous social programs and a tax structure they consider excessive.

The backlash peaked in 2010 when Republicans chose tea party favorite Tom Emmer as their candidate for governor. The staunch conservative beat several Minnesota moderates for the nomination and then narrowly lost to liberal Democrat Mark Dayton. With Republicans in control of the Minnesota Legislature, state government has one of the widest ideological splits in the nation, made plain by last spring's budget standoff and the government shutdown that followed.

What all the ferment means for the Republican race this year is a much debated question.

Romney has establishment support from the likes of former Sen. Norm Coleman and former Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

But Jennifer DeJournett, a conservative activist who's working on Gingrich's Minnesota campaign, said political developments of the last few years have demonstrated that establishment credentials now count for less than ever.

"It used to be, people could anoint you the conservative candidate and that would be fine," said DeJournett, who leads an activist group called Voices of Conservative Women. "I think that's what the establishment is really having to struggle with."

Sensing an opening for a strong social conservative, Santorum's supporters are airing ads in Minnesota including a $134,000 TV buy by one group. He visited a rural corner of the state last week. Paul and Gingrich are also expected to visit. Paul's campaign has already run TV ads. The pro-Romney group Restore Our Future had purchased more than $130,000 of air time as of Friday.

Paul's campaign has organized hard in Minnesota, a state where he finished a distant fourth in 2008.

The Romney kids' $100 million trust fund | G7Finance.com - Finance ...

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ? Mitt Romney?s five sons ? Matt, Tagg, Craig, Ben and Josh ? are sitting pretty with a trust fund worth $100 million.

Getting there took smart tax strategies, and investments that produced great growth, according to the Romney campaign.

Romney and his wife Ann have been giving to the boys since 1995, and, according to a spokesperson for the Romney campaign, all of their contributions have been below gift-tax contribution limits.

The limit for a couple in 1995 was $20,000 and has since grown to $26,000. In addition, there?s a ?lifetime gift-tax exclusion? for all the boys that totaled $1.2 million back in 1995 and has since grown to $10 million.

Add it all up, and the Romneys could have gifted $1.3 million in 1995, and a total of $10.6 million through 2011. All tax free.

To get to $100 million, the account would have needed a 26% average annual compound rate of return, said Jonathan Bergman, chief investment officer at Palisades Hudson Asset Management. Stocks over that same time have gained about 10%.

The Romney campaign noted that winning investments, such as Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500), saw similar gains since the mid-90s. And the trust?s 2010 tax return showed it has invested in the tech giant, as well as other winning investments like Goldman Sachs (GS, Fortune 500), Target (TGT, Fortune 500) and Oracle (ORCL, Fortune 500).

Plus, there are probably many investments we don?t know about. ?Romney probably invested the trust in the same kinds of things he invested in himself, like startups and private equities ? investments with high growth,? said Tim Gagnon, assistant academic specialist of Accounting at Northeastern University.

But even that can?t account for all the gains.

While many of the key details are missing because the family hasn?t released gift-tax returns or disclosed the contributions to the trust, there were likely a few other strategies at play, tax experts said.

?You?ve got people who are paid $1 million a year to work 3,000 hours just to figure out ways to transfer money from older generations to younger generations, and Romney has the money to hire the best of the best,? said Bergman.

As the co-founder of private equity firm Bain Capital, which he left in 1999, Romney has received compensation in the form of ?carried interest?, the share of investment profits that is paid to private equity fund managers. And if Romney transferred this interest to make payments to his kids? trust, he could have received big valuation discounts of up to 40% or more. So if Romney transferred interests in Bain Capital with a net asset value of, say, $14,000, he could have reported the fair market value as only $10,000, below the gift-tax exemption in 1995.

The Romneys could also have loaned money to the trust. While interest on the loans will vary, if the trust uses the loan proceeds to make high-growth investments, it can have more than enough money to pay back the loan.

Another way he could have added money to the trust would have been through a charitable lead trust, which would make a fixed payment to a charity for a specific period of time. Once that term ends, any remaining interest gained while in the trust can flow into the trust for his kids gift-tax-free.

The Romneys could have also set up a Grantor Retained Annuity Trust. When these trusts expire, the beneficiary receives the interest earned on the assets tax-free. They could have transferred a portion of the appreciation of assets into his kids? trust with little or no gift tax.

In the end, it was likely a combination of having a top-tier tax planner who knew exactly how to work the tax code for Romney?s benefit that boosted the trust from a couple million dollars to $100 million in 17 years.

?This is an example of someone who has been very sophisticated and effective in working within the tax code to accomplish his goals,? said Darell Krasnoff, managing director at Bel Air Investment Advisors. ?But it?s not just smart planning. Unless you had a very dramatic rate of return to begin with, you would never get this kind of growth.?

As for paying income taxes on that great growth, Romney is footing the bill. According to his tax forms, the trust is set up as an ?intentionally defective grantor trust,? which means the senior generation pays income tax on the trust each year, but they don?t pay the estate tax. That means the sons won?t have to pay a dime on the trust?s earnings until the assets are distributed or the Romneys pass away.

?Say he was paying a million dollars in income tax on behalf of the trust ? that?s like another million dollar gift to the trust because it?s money the trust doesn?t have to pay,? said Bergman. ? To top of page
