SI Social: Hitman Social Media Game Shows How To Do It Wrong ...

Social media is a fairly new medium, so it?s no surprise that people gaffe from time to time when they try to execute it right. Of course, there?s a varying degree of severity between ?Whoops, I posted the wrong link!? to ?Oh my, I?ve done something so bad that I need to dig a hole and crawl in.? You?might?expect the latter from individuals or smaller companies, but when a big company slips on that level, it comes as a bit of a shock. And that is just what happened yesterday when the enormously high profile video game publisher Square Enix?tried to use a Facebook game to promote their newest title in the Hitman game series.

Since the game itself depicts the adventures of an assassin, the Facebook game in question was a social device that allowed you to ?put a hit? on friends. That?s already a little weird, but with the right comedic twist, I can see the potential for it. However, the faux pas came in the form of a drop down box that allowed you to specify the reason for the hit. The list included PC-unfriendly motivations such as ?her muffin top? and ?her bad hair,? but took the cake with ?her small tits,? which is not only inappropriate language but sexist as hell to boot. Men weren?t left out of the insult war either, as ?tiny penis? was also an option.

As expected, social media exploded over the app ? in exactly the opposite way that Square intended. The app was pulled within hours, apologizing and they issued a statement saying they did not mean to offend their audience. The campaign was created by Emmy-award winning ad agency Ralph, who apparently don?t that cruelly making fun of people before shooting them in the face with a sniper rifle is much of an objection given the game?s ?mature? audience.

Epic fail doesn?t even begin to describe the debacle here. While the newness of social media has made it a necessity for businesses to figure out how to connect with their consumers, it also means a lot of wandering into the creative unknown ? which can yield stellar results or a landmine of bad PR. I keep trying to wrap my brain around how anyone greenlighted this thing, and no matter what angle I come at it from, I still can?t get a handle on it. Kudos to Square-Enix for reacting with lightning speed, removing the app less than an hour after it appeared, but how did it even get that far in the first place?

The fact that the company was willing to put their seal of approval on such a blatant example of juvenile asshattery shows that they?re tragically out of touch with the contemporary climate ? not to mention ignorant of the disastrous PR effects on a brand that wading into these issues can provoke.

Spaceship aims to be science lab

Sir Richard Branson wants his tourist spaceship also to become a high-altitude science platform.

The billionaire's rocket plane will carry six fare-paying passengers just above the atmosphere to experience a few minutes of weightlessness.

But the vehicle has been designed so that its seats can be removed easily and the space filled with science gear.

Passenger flights should begin in 18 months or so; research sorties could start soon after.

The US space agency (Nasa) has already chartered the rocket plane.

"It's likely we might do some science flights quite early in the programme," explained Will Pomerantz from Virgin Galactic.

"Nasa is certainly eager to get their flights conducted - the ones they have already purchased.

"It may also give us some additional time to show off the reliability and the operations of the vehicle, which would give our tourism customers even more confidence.

"I think that if they see a Nasa flight has gone up and gone well, that will make them feel better about their purchase," he told BBC News.

Mr Pomerantz was speaking here at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, the largest annual gathering of Earth scientists.

His intention was to inform this community of the capabilities of SpaceShipTwo (SS2), as the vehicle is sometimes called.

The Virgin executive said geoscientists might want to use SS2 to pursue a range of research fields, including atmospheric chemistry, climate studies, space weather, or even to carry out simple Earth imagery.

The ship will have 43cm-diameter (17in) windows with high quality glass through which to point camera lenses.

It is likely some groups will want to fly their experimental sensors on the plane before committing the technology to an orbiting satellite, Mr Pomerantz added.

SpaceShipTwo is an air-launched vehicle. It will be taken aloft to about 50,000ft (15,200m) by its carrier aircraft WhiteKnightTwo.

On release, SS2 will then ignite a rocket engine to climb to a maximum altitude of about 361,000ft (110km).

Passengers will ride the rocket plane for the fun of it, but scientists would use it for the same reasons they also fly experiments on the International Space Station (ISS) or on sounding rockets - to access microgravity conditions.

The weightless environment provides a unique perspective on physical systems and processes, and is helping researchers to better understand disease and to develop new materials.

"We'll get something on the order of four to five minutes of weightlessness," explained Mr Pomerantz.

"It depends exactly what quality of microgravity you require for your experiment, but it's somewhere in that range.

"Generally speaking, we're similar to or perhaps slightly less than a sounding rocket, depending which sounding rocket it is, but we offer a much larger volume and mass capability.

"The other difference is that sounding rockets take quite a lot of g's; those things really jump off the rails and often will pull 10 g's on lift-off. Because SpaceShipTwo was designed for tourists, it's got a much gentler ride. That could be very important to some scientists."

Virgin Galactic recently signed a deal with the Houston company Nanoracks to design and build SS2's payload mounting system.

The intention is that is uses the same standards as those already specified for the ISS.

The costs of chartering the entire volume of SS2 for science would be broadly comparable to price charged to a full cabin of tourists, Mr Pomerantz said. Tourists are being asked pay $200,000 (?124,000) per seat.

Cork structure makes graphene super-elastic

How do you make wonder material graphene 3D and super-elastic? Structure it like cork.

As well as its exotic conducting properties, graphene ? a single-atom thick arrangement of carbon atoms ? is extraordinarily light and strong. But when stacked to form thicker materials, it turns brittle, limiting its uses.

Impressed by the elasticity of cork, which has a honeycomb structure, Dan Li of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and colleagues dissolved graphene oxide in water and froze it. The resulting ice crystals moulded the material into a honeycomb.

When the water was removed, the graphene left behind had a cork-like structure and was super-elastic, bouncing back to its original size after being compressed by 80 per cent.

Super-elastic graphene could form the basis of flexible electronics and batteries, or conductive biological implants.

Just be aware that in 2012 you can gift up to a maximum of $13,000 per individual per year before you have to file a federal gift tax return (but even if you do have to file, you likely won't actually owe any gift tax).

Vin Scully To Return To Dodgers Broadcast Booth In 2013 For 64th Season With Club

LOS ANGELES -- Vin Scully is sticking around another season to broadcast Los Angeles Dodgers games.

The 84-year-old Hall of Fame broadcaster will return for a record 64th season in 2013. Scully will call all Dodgers home and road games in California and Arizona.

Scully said Sunday that the team's new ownership has "revitalized the city, the team, the fans and myself." He says he's so convinced of the new owners' "great purpose and leadership" that he eagerly looks forward to joining them in pursuit of the team's first World Series title since 1988.

The Dodgers say Scully's tenure is the longest of any broadcaster with any team. He calls all nine innings of the team's TV broadcasts, while the first three innings of each of his games are simulcast on radio.

Dodgers chairman and owner Mark Walter says Scully's return for another season "means a great deal to all of us."

Scully began his professional baseball broadcasting career in 1950 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He has called three perfect games, 25 no-hitters, 25 World Series and 12 All-Star games.

BOSTON (AP) - David Ortiz returned to the lineup, Adrian Gonzalez left it and the Red Sox broke a four-game losing streak.

It was an eventful night for Boston's top two hitters.

Ortiz was back after missing 35 games with a right Achilles strain and had two hits and two RBIs on the first two pitches he saw, sparking Boston to a 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

But Gonzalez was pulled from the lineup minutes before the game amid reports that he was part of a major trade being discussed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"We talked for a little bit," Ortiz said. "He's shocked, like we are a little bit. Adrian wants to be here, that's why he came here, and help this ballclub to win a World Series."

Ortiz already has done that twice, in 2004 and 2007. But the Red Sox went 13-22 while he was sidelined as they dropped to 59-66 before beating the Royals

"David was awesome," said Andrew Bailey, who earned his first save after being sidelined all season until Aug. 14 following right thumb surgery.

"You can't say enough about that guy. And for him to come off the DL and to be such a sparkplug in our offense, he was huge tonight."

Pedro Ciriaco's two-run double in the seventh inning put Boston ahead 4-3, and Jon Lester continued his surge from a poor first-half of the season with seven solid innings.

Lester (8-10) has won his past three starts and seemed fine after leaving with a cramp in his left hamstring with no outs in the top of the eighth. He had thrown three pitches in the inning, all balls.

"I should have said something after pitch one or my warmups," he said.

Lester, who allowed three runs and six hits, felt improvement in his pitching even before his current winning streak.

"I'm just winning. Winning cures everything," he said. "I've been feeling good with the adjustments that we've made. ... I feel like I was headed in the right direction probably five or six starts ago."

Ortiz started the Red Sox scoring with a two-run single in the first off Bruce Chen that drove in Ciriaco and Jacoby Ellsbury, who both singled. Then he doubled with two outs in the third but was stranded.

"He's looking good," Chen said. "I just try and make good pitches, but, obviously, he's one of the best hitters in the American League."

The Red Sox needed Ortiz with Gonzalez not playing.

"I had 10 minutes" before the game to redo the lineup, Boston manager Bobby Valentine said.

In Los Angeles, first baseman James Loney was pulled from the lineup against the Miami Marlins. Gonzalez was leading the Red Sox with 86 RBIs, 145 hits and 37 doubles and was first in the majors with a .398 batting average with runners in scoring position.

They would be involved in a trade that was being discussed that would send right-hander Josh Beckett, left fielder Carl Crawford and infielder Nick Punto to Los Angeles, a baseball official informed of the discussions said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no announcements were made.

Beckett (5-11) was scheduled to pitch for Boston in the second game of the four-game series Saturday night.

Ciriaco continued his surprisingly hot hitting since being called up on July 6 from Triple-A Pawtucket. He went 4 for 6 in a 14-13 loss on Thursday night to the Los Angeles Angels, his third four-hit game of the season, and went 2 for 4 on Friday night.

Trailing 3-2, Boston began the seventh with a walk to Mauro Gomez, who started in place of Gonzalez. Kevin Herrera (1-2) replaced Chen and gave up a single to Mike Aviles, sending Gomez to second. Scott Podsednik than sacrificed the runners to second and third before Ciriaco blooped his double into short left field.

"The leadoff walk in the seventh and then two 0-2 hits did us in," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "The pitch to Ciriaco was actually not a bad pitch, but it's 0-2, you just threw him a good fastball and you come back with a changeup down and in and he hit it."

The Royals had tied the game at 2 in the third on a leadoff homer by Eric Hosmer, his 12th of the year, and an RBI double by Alex Gordon. They went ahead 3-2 in the fourth on a bases-loaded infield single by Johnny Giavotella after a walk to Mike Moustakas, a single by Bryan Pena and a walk to Hosmer.

"He's obviously not having his kind of a year but he's still got great stuff," Gordon said of Lester. "I thought putting up those runs against him was pretty impressive. We just couldn't finish it."

Notes: Jeremy Guthrie (2-3) is scheduled to pitch for Kansas City on Saturday night. ... In their past 16 games, Boston is 5-11 and Kansas City is 10-6. ... The win was Boston's first in a one-run game at home since June 21 when it beat Miami 6-5.

Fitness is a booming, multi-billion dollar industry that is only going to keep growing and growing?especially considering that fact that nearly one-half of Americans are considered overweight. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the number of jobs in the fitness industry is expected to grow by more than 13% over the next five years. And it's no surprise that there is a lot of money to be made helping people to get and stay fit. The money itself draws a lot of people into the industry but that's not the only reason people seek employment in the fitness business. A lot of people do it because they love fitness themselves and enjoy helping others get fit too.

?Today's fitness environment offers a wide variety of job options for those seeking an enjoyable, rewarding job helping people get healthy and fit. And depending on your particular likes, dislikes, goals and aspirations, you can make just enough to get by all the way up to enough to live the high life, if that's what you really want. For some of the lower paying jobs in the fitness industry, just a basic high school diploma will get you in the door. Some of the higher level positions though, require some sort of training or certification. There are even some fitness-related careers that require a four-year college degree or higher.

Let's start by going over some of the fitness-related employment options from which to choose. Starting with the most basic jobs, you can start your career in the fitness industry by working at the front desk of a gym, health club or training facility. This type of position generally does not require an education beyond a high school diploma. You would of course need to have some interpersonal skills and most likely, you should have some computer skills as well. This position is for the most part, not going to be a high-paying job and is going to be a 'job' not a career.

If you start at the front desk and stick with a while?or you otherwise have management experience?you could consider becoming a facility manager. This position pays more than the front desk but it also includes a lot more responsibility. At most clubs or gyms you probably don't need to have a formal education beyond high school for this position but that all depends. Some gyms and health clubs may require either some college and/or formal knowledge of fitness. And this can be a lucrative job track?many people have built successful careers and gym or health club managers.

When most people look at finding a job in the fitness industry though, becoming a personal trainer is one of the most popular career choices. A personal trainer provides one-on-one or group fitness instruction to people who either want a training program tailored to meet their needs or those who just need some to motivate them to stick with the program.

Personal trainers usually work at one gym, multiple gyms or provide services in the home. Trainers provide a lot of different services for their clients. First, they evaluate their clients' fitness levels and determine if they have any injuries or health-related issues that might impact their ability to participate in a training routine. Next, the trainer talks with the client to determine his or her specific health- and fitness-related goals. Personal trainers also need to assess their clients' likes and dislikes, motivation level, diet and eating habits, physical abilities and limitations and anything else that will impact the development of a custom-tailored training program.

Once the trainer has all of this information, he or she can set about developing a customized training program that will help clients to achieve their particular health and fitness goals. Once they've developed the program they work with the client to determine a mutually-agreeable training schedule and off they go. When working with clients, personal trainers demonstrate the proper movements and make certain that clients are performing the exercises properly in order to prevent injury.

In working with their clients trainers must motivate and push them towards their physical limits. And if the person suffers an injury, the trainer may be called upon to create a special rehabilitation program. Some personal trainers also create nutrition plans for their clients too.

Given the complexity of these various job-related responsibilities, it's no surprise that being a personal trainer requires a fair degree of knowledge. It takes more than just being in shape yourself?you need to understand the mechanics of the body and how it operates. That's why most states require personal trainers to be certified.

When it comes to getting certified, there are a number of different options from which to choose. A few of the programs offer online training while others require in-class sessions. Depending on where you live, your local community college, technical college or vocational training school may offer personal training certification classes.

Here are a few other options for obtaining certification as a personal trainer:

1) National Federation of Professional Trainers;
2) National Council on Strength and Fitness;
3) International Sports Sciences Association; and
4) the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America.

Comedy legend Phyllis Diller dies at 95

Phyllis Diller, the housewife turned humorist who aimed some of her sharpest barbs at herself, punctuating her jokes with her trademark cackle, died Monday morning in her Los Angeles home at age 95, her agent confirmed to NBC News.

"She was a true pioneer," Fred Wostbrock said. "The first female stand-up comedian. She paved the way for everybody. She paved the way for Joan Rivers, Ellen DeGeneres, Chelsea Handler. Phyllis was the first of the first. The first female to play Vegas ... she was on Broadway, she made movies.?She did it all."

Her longtime manager, Milton Suchin, told The Associated Press, "She died peacefully in her sleep with a smile on her face."

According to E!, her son Perry found her. She is also survived by two daughters.

Diller suffered a near-fatal heart attack in 1999. The cause of her death has not been released.

"I'm beyond saddened by the death of Phyllis Diller," comedian Joan Rivers posted on Twitter. "We were friends - Melissa and I had a wonderful time with her at lunch just a month ago.

"The only tragedy is that Phyllis Diller was the last from an era that insisted a woman had to look funny in order to be funny," Rivers tweeted. "If she had started today, Phyllis could have stood there in Dior and Harry Winston and become the major star that she was. I adored her!"

"Phyllis Diller was not only a great comedienne but her memorable teaming with Bob Hope brought female comics to the forefront," said comedian Don Rickles. "Her life was filled with goodness and she deserved the respect she received. ?She will be missed."

She was a staple of nightclubs and television from the 1950s ? when female comics were rare indeed ? until her retirement in 2002. Diller built her stand-up act around the persona of the corner-cutting housewife ("I bury a lot of my ironing in the back yard") with bizarre looks, a wardrobe to match (by "Omar of Omaha") and a husband named "Fang."

Wrote Time magazine in 1961: "Onstage comes something that, by its own description, looks like a sackful of doorknobs. With hair dyed by Alcoa, pipe-cleaner limbs and knees just missing one another when the feet are wide apart, this is not Princess Volupine. It is Phyllis Diller, the poor man's Auntie Mame, only successful female among the New Wave comedians and one of the few women funny and tough enough to belt out a 'standup' act of one-line gags."

"I was one of those life-of-the-party types," Diller told The Associated Press in 1965. "You'll find them in every bridge club, at every country club. People invited me to parties only because they knew I would supply some laughs. They still do."

In 1992 she received the American Comedy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Diller didn't get into comedy until she was nearly 40, after her first husband, Sherwood Diller, prodded her for two years to give up a successful career as an advertising and radio writer. Through it all, she was also a busy mother.

"We had five kids at the time. I don't how he thought we'd handle that," she told the AP in 2006.

A Chicago Tribune columnist, describing her appearance at a nightspot there in 1958, noted she was from San Francisco, hailed her as "the weirdest, wildest yet" ? and made sure to mention her five youngsters.

Her husband managed her career until the couple's 25-year marriage fell apart in the 1960s. Shortly after her divorce she married entertainer Warde Donovan, but they separated within months.

Through both marriages and other relationships, the foibles of "Fang" remained an integral part of her act.

"Fang is permanent in the act, of course," she once said. "Don't confuse him with my real husbands. They're temporary."

She also appeared in movies, including "Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number" and "Eight on the Lam" with Bob Hope.

In 1966-67, she was the star of an ABC sitcom about a society family trying to stave off bankruptcy, "The Pruitts of Southampton." Gypsy Rose Lee played a nosy neighbor. In 1968, she was host of a short-lived variety series, "The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show."

But standup comedy was her first love, and when she broke into the business in 1956 it was a field she had largely to herself because female comics weren't widely accepted then.

Although she could be serious during interviews, sooner or later a joke would pop out, often as not followed by that outrageous "AH-HHAAAAAAAAAAAA-HA-HA-HA!" laugh.

"It's my real laugh," she once said. "It's in the family. When I was a kid my father called me the laughing hyena."

Her looks were a frequent topic, and she did everything she could to accentuate them ? negatively. She wore outrageous fright wigs and deliberately shopped for stage shoes that made her legs look as skinny as possible.

"The older I get, the funnier I get," she said in 1961. "Think what I'll save in not having my face lifted."

She felt different about plastic surgery later, though, and her face, and other body parts, underwent a remarkable transformation. Efforts to be beautiful became a mainstay of her act.

Commenting in 1995 about the repainting of the Hollywood sign, she cracked, "It took 300 gallons, almost as much as I put on every morning." She said her home "used to be haunted, but the ghosts haven't been back since the night I tried on all my wigs."

She recovered from a 1999 heart attack with the help of a pacemaker, but finally retired in 2002, saying advancing age was making it too difficult for her to spend several weeks a year on the road.

"I have energy, but I don't have lasting energy," she told The Associated Press in 2006. "You have to know your limitations."

After retiring from standup, Diller continued to take occasional small parts in movies and TV shows ("Family Guy") and pursued painting as a serious hobby. She published her autobiography, "Like a Lampshade in a Whorehouse," in 2005. The 2006 film "Goodnight, We Love You" documented her career.

Her other books included "Phyllis Diller's Housekeeping Hints" and "Phyllis Diller's Marriage Manual."

When she turned 90 in July 2007, she fractured a bone in her back and was forced to cancel a planned birthday appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno." But it didn't stop her from wisecracking: "I still take the pill 'cause I don't want any more grandchildren."

Born Phyllis Driver in Lima, Ohio, in 1917, she married Sherwood Diller right out of school (Bluffton College) and was a housewife for several years before getting outside work.

She was working as an advertising writer for a radio station when a comedy turn at San Francisco's Purple Onion nightclub launched her toward stardom.

She made her network TV debut as a contestant on Groucho Marx's game show, "You Bet Your Life." (Diller, asked if she was married: "Yes, I've worn a wedding ring for 18 years." Marx: "Really? Well, two more payments and it'll be all yours.")

She credited the self-help book, "The Magic of Believing" by Claude M. Bristol, with giving her the courage to enter the business. For decades she would recommend it to aspiring entertainers, even buying it for them sometimes.

"Don't get me wrong, though," she said in a 1982 interview that threatened to turn serious. "I'm a comic. I don't deal with problems when I'm working."

Caterpillar's CEO warns of economic uncertainty: FT

LONDON (Reuters) - The global economic outlook is more uncertain now than at the start of the financial crisis in late 2008, chief executive of Caterpillar , Doug Oberhelman, said on Monday.

The CEO of the world's largest maker of construction equipment also predicted that it could take another five years before Europe's economy begins to see growth again.

"There's never been a more unpredictable set of tea leaves than right now. Even in 2008 and 2009, U.S. housing was already dying and had been for two years. We saw that," Oberhelman is quoted as saying in the Financial Times.

"I don't think the situation is as grave as it was in 2008, but the uncertainty, the storm clouds are around things that none of us know about - like what will happen with the political situation in Europe," he said.

Oberhelman is cited as saying that barring Europe, most big economies looked unlikely to contract, although he said it was not clear whether they would grow significantly.

Square CEO Jack Dorsey is a billionaire on paper.

Twitter and Square co-founder Jack Dorsey will be worth more than $1 billion after his latest fundraising round for his mobile payments startup Square closes, Bloomberg reports.

Square is about to raise $200 million in a deal that would value the startup at $3.25 billion, according to an earlier report by the New York Times.

Dorsey will own a 26 percent stake in Square after the new round, valuing his stake at $845 million, Bloomberg reports.

Taking into account the dilution from the new shares issued, that ownership stake is consistent with what we reported earlier this year, when we noted an Alaska state filing that showed Dorsey owning 28.3 percent of the company after a prior financing round.

Dorsey joins the likes of Mark Zuckerberg and other high-profile Web 2.0 entrepreneurs in being some of the richest founders in the world.
